Benedict Cumberbatch announced today that he will be portraying Shakespeare’s most well-known prince, Hamlet in 2015 at London’s Barbican Theatre.
There were hopes that Hamlet would premiere in 2014, but due to the busy schedules of Cumberbatch and director, Lyndsey Turner, the show will have to premiere in 2015.
Cumberbatch has agreed to a 12 week run, with six weeks of preparation before hand. Throughout the coming year Turner and Cumberbatch will meet periodically to discuss the show.
Hamlet will add to Benedict’s already diverse resume, which includes Star Trek Into Darkness, August: Osage County, best picture winner 12 Years A Slave, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and most notably Sherlock on the BBC series. He is no stranger to theater though; he was recently in a production of Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle.
Fans get to see Benedict this year in The Imitation Game, where he will be portraying Alan Turing – a mathematician and logician who helped cracked the Engima code during World War II.
