The Super Bowl may have been about the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos fighting for a trophy, but the commercials aired during the event received just as much attention.

E! Online reports that one in particular, Coca-Cola’s “It’s Beautiful” commercial, sent Twitter into a frenzy.

Several different nationalities and religions were represented throughout the minute-long clip, with families and friends engaged in everyday activities.

Here’s what some had a problem with: “America The Beautiful” was the soundtrack for the commercial, and the verses alternated between English and a few other languages.

After its debut, #SpeakAmerican began trending on Twitter, and many were quite vocal in their disagreement with the ad’s premise.

“Still confused as to why they were singing about America in all those foreign languages in the Coke commercial. We speak English…”  – Anna Langley, (@annalangleyy)

“Dear Coke commercial…. DO NOT sing my Country’s song of Freedom in a different language. ????” – Devon Mitchell (@DevvMitchell11)

Some criticism used some inflammatory language, and even crossed some insensitive lines.

“Nice to see that coke likes to sing an AMERICAN song in the terrorist’s language. Way to go coke. You can leave America.” – Tyler Wyckoff (@tylerwyckoff24)

Responses defending the commercial ranged from irritation at the critics to sarcasm at its finest.

“People complaining about the Cheerios and Coke commercial… I’m sorry did we go back in time to the 50s? Get over it.”Kelly

“That coke commercial made me realize that there are two types of people. 1) true Americans 2) white people who forgot they were Europeans.”Coast Life Guy

“An interracial couple eating Cheerios and non-English speakers drinking Coke. We’re a Benghazi pizza commercial away from a Texas secession.”Bry Mac

Coca-Cola definitely brought some pertinent issues to light, especially in an age where immigration reform is at the forefront of government debate.

“The only thing more beautiful than this country are the people who live here,” the soft drink company captioned the commercial on their official website.
