By now the news that esteemed poet, author, activist and all-around “phenomenal woman” Maya Angelou passed away has circulated throughout the world. And while most chose to share their favorite memories, poems and quotes from Angelou in honor of the indelible mark she left on this world, the hatemongers of Westboro Baptist “Church” chose to attempt to sully her name with despicable and vulgar memes and videos.

It’s no secret that WBC is comprised of nothing but cowards, frauds and psychopaths; but this attack feels especially hateful. While the world mourned the profound loss of such a wise and wonderful woman, WBC used their unfathomable reach to cheapen her good work simply by speaking her name.
Don’t they just kind of make you feel dirty? Not in the “Oh my God my soul is tainted, I’m such a sinner, I’m clearly going to hell unless I repent” kind of way; but more like “Ohhhh my God, I can’t even say their name without feeling like I need to shower away the filth of their repugnant ‘Church’.”
In the end, though, whatever WBC says, those of us with any common sense know that the poised and amazing Angelou would have countered their hate with sage words of love and tolerance.
Something along the lines of…
"Be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud." #RIPMayaAngelou

Or maybe…
"Nothing can dim the light which shines from within." – Maya Angelou #RIPMayaAngelou

Or perhaps she would have just smiled and walked away, knowing that they weren’t worth her wisdom. Maybe she would have just linked them to this phenomenal piece of literature.
WBC know this: your hate does nothing to diminish the mark this woman left on the world. Her kindness, knowledge, wisdom, tolerance, generosity, selflessness and brilliance will live on forever. Not even a bunch of hateful whack jobs like you can take that from her, or from us.
