Which Stars Fizzled And Which Stars Sizzled At The Glitzy Golden Globes?

We all know that the Golden Globes are the frat party of awards’ season. It is a messy, hilarious quagmire of boozed up celebrities vying for golden blunt objects. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? WRONG! Instead, it turns out to be one of the most fun nights in Hollywood; this year’s made infinitely better by the dynamic duo of hosts, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. This may be the closest anyone ever comes to reaching true perfection.

After any awards show, the conversation generally revolves around two things: The winners, and the fashion. Well, since we’ve already broken down the winners for you, it’s time for me and Ben to break down the best and worst looks of the night. So kick up for your feet and strap in; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Worst

Drew Barrymore, Monique Lhuillier

Dani: Drew finds herself back on the worst-dressed list for this Monique Lhuillier monstrosity. This gown looks like a first-grade Valentine’s Day party gone badly. Drew, please lock it up. Don’t try and drown your bump in frumpy moo-moos; instead embrace it like Olivia Wilde and Kerry Washington so elegantly did (keep a lookout for those two stunners in the best category).

Ben: Big Miracle called and asked for their baby [whale] blanket back. This is nothing short of a prego-disaster. Why do beautiful women insist on NOT dressing for their body!?

Jennifer Lawrence, Dior

Dani: I think this gown should be dubbed “The dress that launched a thousand memes.” From Princess Ariel in her moldy sail dress, to an expanded tampon, the memes have been bountiful ever since JLaw disembarked from her limo in this Dior…thing. This is just not a good look. The styling seems confused, and that dress makes her svelte frame look twice its actual size with that awkward banding in the middle. So disappointing.

Ben:  Agree to disagree with the masses on this one. Though I’m still not a fan of her short, cropped hair, I actually didn’t hate this. I think she took a risk and you either love it or hate it. I think she looked adorable!

Julia Roberts, Dolce & Gabbana

Dani: I’m honestly just kind of confused by this entire getup. The Dolce and Gabbana gown, in and of itself, is beautiful, albeit a bit plain. But the addition of that collared shirt and the matronly up-do has me quite baffled. It’s certainly not what we’ve come to expect from a star of Roberts’ caliber. Hopefully she’ll bring her A game at the upcoming Oscars.

Ben: I feel like Julia’s mom told her the cleavage was too immodest so she opted to cover up with said mother’s blouse…under her beautiful dress. This COULD have been a home run, but instead it was a matronly mess.

Lena Dunham, Zac Posen

Dani: I think the most disappointing thing about this look is that it had the POTENTIAL to be fabulous. This color complements her peaches and cream complexion beautifully, but everything else is just…wrong. The hair is flat, the fit is horrendous, and can somebody PLEASE give this girl a lesson on how to properly stand on the red carpet? Shoulders back, Lena!

Ben: I’m not gonna lie, this look made me cringe. Literally, cringe. The pose, the hair, the dress, the fit…this did NOT work. She needs to stand up straight, hire a new stylist and make the most of her next red carpet appearance. This was almost unforgivable.

Sandra Bullock, Prabal Gurung

Dani: Sandra has been pretty much flawless for the last several award shows; so I suppose she was due one rubbish look. Well, here it is. The cut is awkward, the dress gobbles her up, and she kind of just looked confused the whole night. Well, she was in good company, because this dress certainly had me baffled.

Ben: Why are all my leading ladies in the bottom tier of fabulous so far this year?! Julia, Jennifer, Zooey and Sandra! Again! The big, frumpy disappointment at the Golden Globes is the last straw…I want Sandy back!

Zooey Deschanel, Oscar de la Renta

Dani: I don’t know where to even begin. The head-to-toe matching has got to go, first of all. The flower, the jewels, the dress and the shoes look like they were all made from the same terrible design. She looks old and frumpy; two things we all know damn well Zooey is not. Fail.

Ben: Throw on a bib, bonnet and rattle and she’s all set. I’m so sad.

Dishonorable Mentions: This week’s Dishonorable Mentions go to Heidi Klum (Marchesa), Taylor Swift (Carolina Herrera) and Caitlin Fitzgerald (Emelia Wickstead).

Dani: Taylor: you are young and (some say) talented, stop trying to look like your granny. Heidi; I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: start acting like the “fashion icon” you’re supposed to be. Caitlin: Um, what?

Ben:Honestly, they’re so dishonorable that I can’t bring myself to mention them.

Worst Of The Night

Dani: I’ve got to give it to Jennifer Lawrence. She may not have looked head-to-toe worst, but I just cannot get past this fugly gown.

Ben:Lena Dunham was by far the most awkward, horrific looking individual at the Globes. I’m sorry, I have no better way of saying it.

Best

Cate Blanchett, Armani

Dani: This woman, I tell you what. She is perfection, from head-to-toe. Literally, perfection. Her hair, makeup, jewelry, posture and that incredible Armani gown create a perfect storm of stunning. She can do no wrong, as far as I’m concerned.

Ben: Cate Blanchet is perfection through and through. She was stunning in her Armani gown and she glowed with the radiance one would expect of an Elven Queen.

Olivia Wilde, Gucci & Kerry Washington, Balenciaga

Dani: Drew, THIS is how you dress a baby bump. These two beauties looked absolutely radiant in their maternity looks. Olivia was possibly the sexiest star of the night, bump be damned. That skin-tight Gucci number could have easily crossed into inappropriate territory; but instead she nailed it. The tousled hair and her subtle makeup make the whole thing incredible. And Kerry’s understated elegance in this Balenciaga stunner just makes me so happy. Brava, ladies.

Ben:Kerry Washington took home the prize for best dressed expectant mother in my book. Her white Balenciaga number complimented her body so perfectly and she just looked amazing! Olivia’s wasn’t my absolute favorite, the fit just seemed awkward to me. Though the color was amazing and she looked stunning!

Lupita Nyong’o, Ralph Lauren

Dani: This looks left me speechless. She was so incredibly beautiful, I was afraid to look at her full-on. It was almost like looking into the sun. This was the 12 Years a Slave star’s first red carpet and she certainly left an impression. I have zero critiques.

Ben:This was such an elegant and well-thought-out choice by Lupita. Her red carpet debut was definitely a hit!

Margot Robbie, Gucci:

Dani: Another relative newcomer to the Hollywood scene is Wolf of Wallstreet star Margot Robbie. And man-oh-man did she ever come with her Gucci blazing. This dress is incredible. Simple and understated, yet unique and just breathtakingly beautiful. Her hair, jewels, makeup, and those gorgeous emerald shoes brought the entire thing together to make for an absolutely stellar look.

Ben:I found myself going back to Margot’s picture again and again. She looked absolutely amazing. This is the kind of look I would expect to see from Jennifer, Taylor, Julia and Sandy. Take note ladies; Margot is on the right track!

Kate Beckinsale, Zuhair Murad

Getty Images Getty Images

Dani: I almost, kind of, a little bit hate Kate Beckinsale. Know why? Because as the year’s pass and I start looking my age (okay, maybe even a few years older), she continues to defy physics and only  looks younger and more flawless. How is this fair? Kate, you are perfect. Change nothing, ever.

Ben: Kate rarely disappoints me on the red carpet. She’s so stunningly gorgeous it makes my cheeks hurt. She was flawless in her Zuhair Murad gown…picture perfect!

Uma Thurman, Versace

Getty Images Getty Images

Dani: I have to say, I was a bit shocked by how gorgeous Uma looked at the Globes. She tends to be on the disappointing side, typically, so this look was a welcome change of pace. This Versace on her body blows my mind. Her messy up-do and gorgeous makeup give her a spark of youth we’ve not seen in years from Ms. Thurman. Stunning; absolutely stunning.

Ben: Uma is not always one I would say is on my list of stars to watch on the red carpet, but she nailed it with the Versace gown. She looks like she’s ready to Kill Bill all over again with just her looks.

Honorable Mentions: The Honorable Mentions this week are bestowed upon Sofia Vergara (Zac Posen), Michelle Dockery (Oscar de la Renta), Reese Witherspoon (Calvin Klein) and Bradley Cooper (Tom Ford).

Getty Images Getty Images

Dani: Sofia; I was so thrilled to see in you in a silhouette other than mermaid that I almost wept for joy. Michelle; while this dress was gorgeous, a spray tan would have helped to avoid the color washing you out. Otherwise, thumbs up. Reese; this color on you is bangin’, and so is your body and that uneven bob. Gorgeous. Bradley; yum. That is all.

Ben:I think Michelle Dockery is one of the most beautiful women; she looked amazing in her Oscar de la Renta gown. Her skin, her hair, her eyes, ugh…everything! Reese is another one I can agree looked absolutely stunning…does she ever age?! Allison Williams also impressed once again.

Best of the Night:

Dani: This is honestly so hard. I thought all of the ladies on this list looked incredible, so picking just one is no easy task. But, since I’ve got to, I suppose I’m going to give it to Lupita Nyong’o. I was just so enamored with this entire look. I’ve never seen a rookie starlette steal the spotlight like she did. Well done, Lupita! I can’t wait to see what else you’ve got in store for us!

Ben: My best dressed also goes to a newcomer, but I’ve chosen Margot Robbie. Her walk down the yellow brick road in her emerald encrusted gown with her emerald green pumps was flawless. The Wolf of Wall Street actress could prove to be a red carpet darling if she keeps this up!

Well that does it for us this week, folks! But don’t you worry. We’ll be back recapping the fashion wrap up after every award show this season, so stick with us!
