Logan has become a benchmark in the superhero movie genre, and the minds behind the film are hoping to keep the trend going with a spin off specifically following the character of X-23.
So, what’s in the cards at the moment for the upcoming film? Well, nothing remotely close to a release date or casting news. "We're just working on a script," said Logan director James Marigold. While there isn’t much more to go on, it’s certainly enough to start building up anticipation.
Though she was only recently introduced into the movie universe, the character of X-23 was originally created for X-Men: Evolution, an animated X-Men program that aired from 2000-2003. The character proved so well liked that she made the jump into comics, where she even had a series to herself, written by Marjorie Liu.
Though we won’t be seeing any more of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, X-23—with her similar abilities—is definitely a more than suitable replacement and the fantastic acting of Dafne Keen proves that the character deserves a series all to herself. Keen's return is not necessarily a guarantee, though the studio definitely wants to bring her back if they are able to.
"Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way,” says producer Hutch Parker. “It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe."
Logan grossed $616.7 million worldwide and proved that, alongside the success of Deadpool, a rated R comic book film can bring in plenty of acclaim…and of course, money. Though no specific details about the X-23 film are out in the world yet, it certainly seems like the obvious choice to make.
