Toronto-based artist Zolo is bringing his own fresh, unique vibe with his latest single “Brand New.”
An intriguing mix of hip-hop and electronic music, amplified by energetic trombone and trumpet notes, it’s an easy club hit and one you’ll want to blast this summer.
The music video, which we’re premiering right here today, was shot with Zolo’s current home city as the backdrop, and I was instantly reminded of Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3X” and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” with the background dancers and high energy–it manages to capture an old-school attitude the way the latter does, but more subtly.
Zolo, a UK native, debuted as a solo artist in 2012 with a mixtape after spending some brief time with a band. He followed that with his first EP, Lost, in 2013. He’s no stranger to the club charts in his home country–his single “Feel It” gained recognition in the top 20, and he’s collaborated with several DJs–Dance Floor Junkies, Young Wolf Hatchlings, to name a couple.
As is obvious with tracks like “Brand New,” he draws from multiple genres when creating his music. It’s certainly a stand-out, and appropriate considering he was born in the UK, raised in NY, and now lives in Canada. Nothing feeds creativity quite like such a combination of experiences and environments.
