Heyyy girl, whatcha doin’? Not basing her music on her personal experiences, that’s what. New Girl star singer-actress Zooey Deschanel said in a recent interview she doesn’t draw on past life experiences for inspiration when it comes to making music. Deschanel is touring all summer with her indie band She & Him and is taking an acting break to focus on her music.
“It is the same thing for when people ask me, when I act, am I drawing from my own experience? Well no, I would run out of experiences really fast,” said Deschanel, whose divorce from Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard was finalized last December. Instead Deschanel and M. Ward, the other half of She & Him, produce music that focuses on pulling musical inspiration from the world around them rather than coming from the limited perspective of personal heartache.
Their recent song ‘Never Wanted Your Love’, comes from She & Him’s recently released fourth album, Volume 3, isn’t an indication of past experiences rather from a keen interest in the emotion of unrequited love. When asked what does influence her music Deschanel responded, “I find things that are interesting, moving, maybe people I know or their emotions or movies or other songs, even just a thought or a feeling.” Deschanel also added, “Not that there is anything wrong with confessional song writing, there are plenty of people that do that I admire. I think it is great it just isn’t how I do things.”
