It sure looks like the 2016 MTV VMAs will be all about Beyonce and Adele after getting a peek at the official list of nominations!
We’re coming up on awards show season, and MTV’s VMAs are kicking things off!
This year’s VMAs are set to take place on Saturday, August 28 and will be aired live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. It’s currently unclear who will be taking over hosting duties from Miley Cyrus, who provided quite a bit of entertainment (and eye catching looks) while hosting last year’s event. Although we aren’t quite up to date with the production, we do now know who is up for awards…
MTV released the nominations for this year’s show earlier this morning (July 26) on their Facebook page, and the nominations recognize some of the hottest releases of the last year.
Leading the list of nominations is none other than Beyonce, who has netted a cool 11 nods for her Lemonade visual album. The “Formation” siren will be duking it out with Adele, Justin Bieber, Drake, and Kanye West for the coveted title of Video of the Year and is also nominated in categories including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Collaboration Video, Breakthrough Long Form Video, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and (surprisingly) two nominations in the Best Choreography category.
Trailing closely behind is Adele, who received an impressive 8 nominations, all of which are for her massively successful “Hello” visual. Male heavy hitters Drake and Justin Bieber are trailing closely behind and nominated acts include The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Fifth Harmony, Coldplay, Calvin Harris, Mike Posner, The Chainsmokers, Florence + the Machine, amongst others.

While it’s nice to see up and comers such as Alessia Cara (“Wild Things”) and Troye Sivan (Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy) recognized for their impressive releases, fans are already beginning to question MTV’s decisions.
After last year’s epic shade fest between MTV, Nicki Minaj, and (unnecessarily) Taylor Swift over alleged snubs, many fans have taken to social media to see if their favs are upset about not receiving nominations.
One such celeb to comment on their lack of nomination is Nick Jonas, who expressed some disappointment about “Close” not receiving a nomination in any categories. Fans who were expecting massive breakdowns though were left wanting more, as Nick J took things in stride. He has had a pretty fantastic year, and he’s undoubtedly celebrating the fact that Joe Jonas’s DNCE is up for the title of Best New Artist. Guess you can’t win ’em all.
Won’t let this one thing get to me. I’m feeling so inspired and grateful these days. Gonna focus more on caring less about the small stuff.
