@JBouresAlex Hribal, a 16-year-old high school student, stabbed 22 people at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville Wednesday morning leaving five students in critical condition. New York Daily News reported Hribal used two 8-10 inch knives in the stabbing, injuring 21 students and a school security guard. As students arrived for classes at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, Hribal assaulted a classmate, piercing his liver with a knife. Hribal continued to assault others until a security guard and an assistant principal tackled him. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene at 7:13am. Currently there are no known motives for the attack, however police are investigating a threatening phone call between Hribal and an upperclassman the night before the attack. Freshman Hope Demont told the Pittsburg Post Gazette about the phone call, explaining that Hribal said, “I’m going to f--- you up.” Students and faculty evacuated the building when the fire alarm was pulled, moving to the nearby middle school. The Murrysville school district released the following statement during the attack: "A critical incident has occurred at the high school. All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure. Additional information will be released as soon as possible. Please keep our campus clear of traffic." District Attorney John Peck reported the Hribal made comments “suggesting he wanted to die” after he was taken into custody. Hribal was charged as an adult with four accounts of attempted homicide and 21 accounts of aggravated assault. Matt DeCasere, a junior at the high school, shared friends with Hribal and knew his family as an upstanding part of the Murrysville community. DeCasere told Buzzfeed Hribal had been “on edge” this week. “I know some people who knew him well and they can’t seem to put an exact pinpoint on what caused it” said DeCasare. “I heard earlier this week when people tried to talk to him in Spanish class — I know one girl tried to talk to him and he seemed a little on edge, a little different than usual this week.” The FBI are currently assisting Murrysville police in investigating Hribal’s background. Patrick Thomassey, Hribal’s defense attorney, is asking for a psychiatric examination. Thomassey told Good Morning America, “At this point, he’s confused, scared and depressed. Over the next few days we’ll try to figure out what the heck happened here. I think he understands what he did. … I don’t think he realizes how severely injured some of these people are.” Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and hope for the best in Pennsylvania.
