As they are now, the 1950s and ’60s were a trying time in regards to race relations for our Nation.  The “funny papers” were able to bring a subconsciously unified sense of levity for so many people; and one of those famed comic strips was Peanuts

Harriet Glickman, a school teacher, wrote a letter to the comic strip’s creator, Charles M. Schulz. urging him that an African-American character needed to be added to the popular comic strip.  “Franklin Armstrong” was introduced on July 31, 1968, representing the importance of desegregation. Franklin soon became Charlie Brown’s best friend; they met on the beach in his first appearance.

In order to properly mark the 47th anniversary of his debut, here are a few fun facts about Franklin: This kid is an excellent dancer! He’s shown breakdancing in several of the show’s specials. Ice hockey is Franklin’s favorite sport. You can see him practicing in many of the comic strips.

Franklin has been voiced by 19 actors throughout the years. The Peanuts Movie is his first appearance on screen since 1999, where he will be voiced by child actor and YouTube star Mar Mar.
