With Halloween approaching, I've been getting myself in the mood by watching all sorts of horror movies. Some of my favorites are slasher films for their brutal and often sickly humorous kill scenes. Here are eight of the best deaths from slasher film history.
Trombone Stabbing - The Town That Dreaded Sundown
Getting stabbed to death by a pocket knife attached to a trombone while a masked maniac tries to blow a tune is quite a unique kill. Not as gruesome as other deaths on this list, but the sheer creativity of it earns a spot on this list.
Death To Paris - House of Wax
Many people roll their eyes at the thought of Paris Hilton acting, and the 2005 remake of House of Wax was not well received. However, it was well worth the ticket price for one specific scene. Who didn't want to see the Simple Life star impaled through the forehead?
Wanna Play Psycho Killer? - Scream
Scream satirized the slasher genre while becoming a classic slasher film itself. A film chock-full of cliches, one of its biggest moments that makes the audience go "Oh, that's a bad idea" was Tatum Riley's death. After joking with Ghostface that she wants to be in the sequel, Tatum realizes the masked person isn't messing around and tries to escape through a doggy door in the garage. It doesn't go well; just watch.
Tumble Dry - My Bloody Valentine
In a film plagued by editing demands from the MPAA for excessively violent and graphic scenes, one of the most gruesome is Mabel's mutilated body falling out of the dryer and spinning her cooked body around. If, for some reason, you prefer the 2009 remake, there was one kill that was particularly eye-popping in 3D. Mabel's death made the list instead because, if it upsets the MPAA, you know it is a good kill (plus, I have a Canadian bias).
Falling Chainsaw - American Psycho
American Psycho is not the first film that comes to mind when you think slasher flicks. Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker in an Armani suit, not a disfigured psychopath in a mask, but he still has an affinity for killing. When one of his victims almost makes a getaway, Bateman pursues her with a chainsaw and drops it down several flights of steps for a very memorable kill.
Sleeping Bag - Friday the 13th Part VII
Friday the 13th is one of the most popular slasher film franchises, but it took until the seventh film to find a kill worthy of this list. It is an instinctive reaction to hide from danger under the covers, but that doesn't work for one camper. When she pulls her sleeping bag over her eyes, Jason simply drags her screaming inside the bag and bats her against a tree. Effective and oddly funny, it's my favorite kill in the franchise.
No Head For His Crown - Prom Night
Lots of throats have been slashed in many horror films over the years, but, this time, the entire head is coming off. Wendy's plan to embarrass her ex-boyfriend backfires when she has Lou tie up Nick and take his place. Just as the prom king and queen are being announced, the killer decapitates Lou backstage, sending his head flying through the curtain and shocking everyone on the dance floor.
Blended - You're Next
Last, but certainly not least, is my favorite slasher kill to date. You're Next is such a great slasher film, particularly because of who ends up doing most of the slashing. Fending off an attacker, the heroine smashes a blender on the attacker's face to incapacitate him. She then proceeds to stab the remaining shards of the blender into his skull. Plugging it in, she turns his brains into a smoothie. For such an inventive death to a character I really didn't like, putting it on this list was a no-brainer (no pun intended). Revealing which character gets blended really spoils the plot, so you'll have to watch this film for yourself.
Did I leave out your favorite slasher kill? There are plenty of other great ones out there, so let's hear them in the comments!
