Buffy the Vampire Slayer turned 20 recently, and, in the wake of the epic EW reunion (and the news that Joss Whedon is going to direct Batgirl), I think it’s time we take a look at one aspect of the Buffy-verse that goes underappreciated. I’m talking about Fray, the Slayer of the Future. Here are 5 reasons every Buffy and Whedon fan should pick up a copy of this comic if they haven’t already.
1) It continues the story of the Slayer
Sure, it’s not Buffy, but we still get plenty of vampire-slaying action and a continuation of the mythology established in the original Buffy TV series. Melaka Fray definitely isn’t Buffy, and her training and techniques are unique to her, making her a wonderful addition the Slayer line.
2) It takes place in the future
If you love science fiction, this is a comic for you. Featuring a futuristic society that not only features futuristic technology but also mutants, providing a setting and cast of characters that definitely keep things entertaining.
3) The world is definitely different
Unlike on Buffy, where there was a demon around every corner, the world of Fray is remarkable different. The big bads have been gone for a while now, leaving only vampires — now called Lurks — behind. Demonkind is only starting to make a comeback when Fray is called to defend humanity, meaning there is a lot of learning to do along the way.
4) Family is key
Much like Buffy’s relationship with Dawn, Melaka’s relationship with her sister is troubled but ultimately touching. With her sister Erin working for the polic and Mel’s role as a thief, you just know that these two are going to butt heads, but, when it comes to battling the forces of darkness, they can rely on each other to help save the day.
5) It crosses over with Buffy
For you non-comic readers who are worried about missing the original Buffster, you’ll be happy to know that, due to time travel shenanigans, Buffy and Fray do cross paths, meaning the Slayer you know and love interacts with the Slayer of the future in a way that I don’t want to spoil because it’s amazing.
