Marmalade sandwiches anyone?
The Weinstein Company have acquired rights to bring the children’s classic Paddington Bear to the big screen in North America. Paddington will be the first release from new label TWC-Dimension that branches from the company.
The live action CGI will bring to life the anthropomorphic bear fifty-six years after Michael Bond created the Peruvian explorer in his books. Voicing the marmalade loving Paddington will be The King’s Speech star Colin Firth and Moulin Rouge star Nicole Kidman will play an evil taxidermist. The A-Listers have actually recently worked together in new movie, The Railway Man.
Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins who adopt Paddington after finding him lost at London’s famous train station will play Mr and Mrs Brown. With an already plausible line-up Julia Walters has also been cast as housekeeper Mrs Bird and Jim Broadbent will play Mr Gruber, the antiques shop owner often joining Paddington for elevenses.
Producing the film is David Heyman meaning the story is set to be magical as he recently produced the Harry Potter franchise. Paul King will direct. King is best known for his peculiar comedy The Mighty Boosh. We should expect a quirky edge to the classic tale. The financial backing is coming purely from Studio Canal. Filming is set to take place in the UK.
The film will be released in the UK on November 28 2014, perfect holiday season timing. TWC-Dimension will however not release the title until early 2015 in the USA. With Michael Bond’s books already selling more than 35 million copies worldwide in 40 different languages the film is set to be a worldwide family hit.
