The Normal Heart is finally coming to a television near you. The program is based on Larry Kramer’s Tony Award-winning 1985 play of the same name follows a group of gay men in 1980’s New York City during the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The made-for-television movie will premiere sometime in the Spring 2014, on HBO. American Horror Story and Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy directed The Normal Heart. He worked, for three years, on the script so that the star-studded film would be perfect. “Of everything I’ve done in my career, I think it is the biggest labor of love,” proclaimed the director about the movie, which stars Julia Roberts and Matt Bomer.
Due to all that is happening in the world, Murphy feels this movie is coming out at the right time. There is a lot of LBGT headlines at this time. He also claims this is a civil rights movie and that it’s “about the quest to be seen, not as a gay person or a straight person but just a person.”
So, what are your thoughts – are you looking forward to this Murphy film, or will you skip watching it? Do you think plays can be turned into good films?
