Bec Heim Managing Editor Welcome to the second half of the Top 20! Tonight Teams Cee-Lo and Christina will hit the stage! It will be just me tonight as the other half of the Dynamic Duo is stuck at work. How will their performances fare? Will we have more amazing performances coming up tonight? Well let’s see shall we? “Say Something” sung by A Great Big World with Christina Aguilera: Wow. Christina is warming up the golden pipes lately. This is a really nice song. It’s quiet and sweet and gentle. It sounds almost like a lullaby. All I can say here is that music and the vocals are really, really pretty. Definitely buy it or get it. It’s a great listen. All of Cee-Lo going first? I don’t understand this line up. “Wasting All These Tears” sung by Amber Nicole: She is making her musical family very proud. OhmyGod baby Usher! SO CUTE!!!! She is singing Cassadee Pope’s first single. The lines and runs are in danger of blurring together. She wants to show America her versatility. I’m just not sure if the runs are good for this song. I get what they’re doing. They’re making this song a little more urban. I think she swallows some of her words. Some notes are not connecting. It’s solid but yeah I don’t see her making it. Adam says that he loves Cee-Lo encouraging her for going out. Adam said that she messed up a little on the big note but likes seeing a different side of her. Blake said she did a good job and noticed the same issue with the note. Christina likes her emotion and thought she was a little sharp instead of flat. Cee-Lo said she did a great job and thinks it was nerves for the note. “Bittersweet Symphony” sung by Jonny Gray: Jonny has gotten a lot of support from the vets. Cee-Lo says that Jonny needs a song that he can emotionally connect with. Jonny does sing better when he feels the meaning behind a song. I actually have never heard of this song. I like Jonny’s voice but I’m unsure about the song. The pacing of the song is throwing me off the most. He finds his groove easily in the song. Actually as the song goes on it grows on me. He works that stage. I think I liked it? I feel unsure. I liked his voice. I’m very certain that…I can’t vocalize it. Adam says that he loves his voice and that it is a snarling beast of a song. He said that Jonny recreated it beautifully. Adam says that he was a bit too contained in the beginning. Christina said that he was really accurate and that he had a great tone. She thought he was being too accurate and then it went looser toward the end. Cee-Lo thought it was a great job and that Jonny connected with it beautifully. He thought it was a good marriage between song and singer. We return and everyone gets sassy about their clothes. “I Will Survive” sung by Tamara Chaunice: Her church back home supports her so much. Cee-Lo said that the song fits her and wants to give her girl power. Um it seems a bit karaoke? It made be good. Tamara has a lot of power in her voice. She says that she needs to “go hard or go home.” I just wonder about “stripped down” and the definition of it for the show. Tamara walks out though and OWNS it. It’s a fun number. What is around her neck? Why is she wearing that? It’s a lot of power but well it’s not very different? I liked it. It was very funky and powerful. It just felt like something I heard before as well. Adam said that Cee-Lo took them back to the 70’s and that Tamara had her best performance at the best time. Blake says that she looks beautiful and that she took a tall order and made it great. Cee-Lo thought she looked beautiful singing and brought some music education with her performance. “She Keeps Me Warm” sung by Kat Robichaud: Cee-Lo wants to show off her heart and soul along with her range. She channels her feelings about her husband into the song. Cee-Lo wants her to be breathy and emotional. There is some honest emotion in the performance. I just wonder about her voice for this song. I do like the overall performance though. She is a natural performer. She just gave a hug to a random person and is just so happy to be here. Adam thought it was awesome. He calls himself an idiot and wants to see more of Kat. Christina wants to see a little more of the Kat crazy and wanted her to go higher. She appreciated the intent and thought it was lovely. Cee-Lo wanted people to know she was all heart and was glad they accomplished it. “We’re Going To Be Friends” sung by Caroline Pennell: Caroline’s teachers and school are going crazy about it. She feels so much more confident. Caroline said the biggest challenge is finding the versatility. Cee-Lo wants her to charm America. Oh she sounds lovely. I love her voice. I really, really, really love her voice. It sounds sweet and warm. It’s just so perfect. I love it so much. Adam said that he heard purely Caroline in the song. He just enjoyed her and her voice. Blake said that he could be getting something amputated and that Caroline’s voice is so charming it makes him happy. Cee-Lo said that she also did exposure and that she did such an amazingly sweet rendition of the song. “Crazy” sung by Josh Logan: Christina picks the song because Josh is very real about what he does. It’s been a long journey for Josh and he feels this is the best opportunity for him. Christina wants him to not let the listener relax. Oh God he’s doing that thing where it sounds like someone is eating the microphone. He has a rasp to his voice. I think they’re sticking the weakest artists of both teams out first tonight. Josh continues to be solid but does not wow me. The background music sounds like elevator music or something I would hear in my dentist’s office. It was solid but not the best. Cee-Lo thanked Christina for the great taste in music. He said he had to wear his shades because he is shy. He is flattered and thought he did a great job. Adam thought Josh did awesome. Christina said that she could listen to an album of Josh and his big box of tricks. “Roar” sung by Olivia Henken: I don’t know her. She can be a touch pitchy. She signed a guitar for Hard Rock Café back home. Christina wants to combine pop and country with the song. Christina doesn’t want the wall of sound. Instead she wants tender moments. Something is wrong. She sounds off or pitchy or something. Nothing sounds right here. It’s making me claw at my ears at bit. Plus that big note seemed to have taken a lot out of her and she stumbles. I also can’t hear her well in some places. I’m not sure if that’s the microphone or her but it’s making this song painful. I am in pain listening to this. Blake said he is surprised how well a country voice works here. That is a flat out lie, Blake. Christina said she is proud of what Olivia has done. “Georgia On My Mind” sung by Stephanie-Anne Johnson: Another song I haven’t heard of tonight. Christina is excited to have her back for her unique tonality and inflections. She wants to dedicate it to her adorable grandmother. Her father, she reveals, has lung cancer and that he is still here. She wants her Dad to see her do it. Christina said that she needs a bit more emotion and not to extend the notes. Oh hello Stephanie. Her voice sounds very rich and full of emotion. She just owns the song utterly. Oh that note right there was awesome. This is just a lovely and full and powerful song. She owned it. Cee-Lo has mixed emotions of amazement and jealousy. He loved this strong, confident, and assertive version of Stephanie. Adam was terrified of the idea on paper but during her version he had his mind on how amazing she is. Christina loves her unique, rich quality and jazz tones to her voice. She gets her to sing on second of opera. “Wrecking Ball” sung by Matthew Schuler: Matthew said his community has been in an uproar. He needs to stop thinking about the four-chairs too much. Christina wants him to show more dimensions by using a pop song. Christina said he is magical and needs more confidence. I’m surprised he’s not the final performance of the night. He opens with a good rich breathiness then he punches you in the face with his power. Oh that long run was awesome and then the glory note. Damn I’m still impressed by him no matter what goes on. Cee-Lo loved it so much that he hated it. Adam shares Cee-Lo’s pain and says that what Matthew exuded is what is amazing. Blake tells his team to watch Matt. Christina is thrilled and that he always brings it. “I Put A Spell On You” sung by Jacquie Lee: I’m honestly surprised she is going last. She has started to keep a journal so she can be inspired. Christina says that she has a lot of spirit and soul. The emotion is important here for the song in Christina’s opinion. Damn girl has a big voice. Oh wow. Okay at some points she gets a bit nasally but damn! I’m so impressed that I don’t care. THAT ENDING NOTE HOLY HELL THAT ENDING NOTE! Cee-Lo cannot even talk because the room is going nuts. When he can talk he calls it the absolute best: a mix of the past and present with her as the future. Adam said that Cee-Lo has become a vicious competitor and that she pissed him off with her amazingness. Christina said that she has grown so much and is so thrilled. She is honored to be her coach.
