Staff WriterIn what ScreenRant is calling “the most anti-climatic news to come out of Marvel Studios’ Phase Two campaign so far “, we've finally learned that Kick-Ass actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson is in fact playing the character of Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, in Marvel's Phase 2 movie Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Elizabeth Olsen, who is set to play his sister the Scarlet Witch, has yet to be confirmed but at least we have one part of the brother/sister duo down pat. So, what was the problem in officially confirming the actor had the part? Well, it seems that his press obligations tied to Legendary's reboot of Godzilla was the problem. The publicity tour for the film would've overlapped with the filming schedule for Ultron. Now that that's all out of the way, his availability is all but ensured. Marvel had no comment on the subject but it's safe to say both Olsen and Taylor-Johnson are in the clear for the Marvel super-film. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, the two are twins of X-Men's Magneto. But don't expect Michael Fassbender or Ian McKellan to reprise their role as the metal-bending villain in the Marvel film. Magneto and the rights to the X-Men are owned by 20th Century Fox. Does that ultimately mean that Marvel's version of the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will be different than what most comic book fans know already? It's hard to tell, but at a press junket promoting Kick-Ass 2 a couple months ago, Taylor-Johnson gave a few insights into what he'd been doing to prepare for the role. “There’s years – over 50 years – of backstory on him all there to use, and I like doing that. Him and his sister [Scarlet Witch] have been abandoned by their parents and their father, and they grew up in Eastern Europe defending and looking out for themselves and each other…His sister really is his guidance – emotionally she’s the one who looks after him, and vice versa. He’s very overprotective physically – he doesn’t want anyone touching her.” When speaking about what Quicksilver brings to the team in terms of personality, he had this to say: “He has real anger frustration – I like that. I always thought it’d be quite funny if you saw him eating loads and people asked him why and he’d explain it’s because he’s burning so much energy all the time. Or ideas that you’d see him come back round – but he’s already nipped out and got his lunch somewhere else. He just got bored – his attention span is so quick.” Whichever way Joss Whedon goes with the two characters, it's going to be fun ride and Taylor-Johnson seems like the perfect fit. Let's just hope Marvel gets to announcing more tidbits about Age Of Ultron. This PopWrapper wants some more info and stat. It's all too exciting and so far, Phase 2 is shaping up to be amazing. You can catch the latest Phase 2 movie Thor: The Dark World on November 8th.
