Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame is still moving the world, two movies and almost two centuries after it was first published!
A mini-series, titled Esmeralda after the heroine, is being developed by ABC Studios and Mandeville Films, the story will be told from her perspective. The series will be most likely based on the Disney version rather than Hugo’s original version however because it will be an ABC show, we can expect some drama.
Evan Daugherty, who penned the controversial Snow White and the Huntsman, will be the show’s head writer. This is the third Disney show going on ABC, the other two being the successful Once Upon A Time and its spin-off Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. Esmeralda may not be directly tied to OUAT, but as Rebecca Pahle from The Mary Sue says, “given Disney/Marvel/ABC’s tendency to tie its properties together in a neat package it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch” to expect a cross over between these two.
No info on a potential release date or further details has been released, but we’ll keep you posted on this up-and-coming ABC/Disney enterprise.
