Universal Pictures made the announcement today that actress Elizabeth Banks will be directing her first full feature with Pitch Perfect 2. The original film starred Anna Kendrick as the cynical, aspiring music producer, Beca, and perhaps most memorably, Rebel Wilson as the movie’s iconic character, “Fat Amy.” Banks herself also had a role in the first film, though it was much smaller than some of her previous roles like Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and most recently, The Hunger Games. Banks played Gail, an announcer for the important A cappella competition at the film’s center. She exchanges her opinions freely throughout the film, except for her frustration with her occasionally misogynistic co-host, whom she calls out at the end of the film. While the moment provided an empowering laugh to the audience, people can look forward to Bank’s taking a more prominent role behind the camera. A proven female of comedy, Banks has a great deal to offer to the successful film’s sequel. However, Banks has a lot of pressure on her plate, as the original film was a huge success. According to the LA Times, it grossed $65 million domestically, and more than $115 million worldwide. All of this success was earned off a meager budget (compared to earnings) of $17 million. Pitch Perfect stretched beyond the theater and TV screen, reaching a top 10 billboard hit with the movie’s popular hit, “Cups.” Bank’s résumé as a director is small, which may worry dedicated fans of the film. A few short films, and a piece of an anthology film called Movie 43, are the only credits that Banks can claim, none of which achieved much success. In particular, Movie 43 was a bust. It appears that in this situation people are just going to have to aca-believe in Banks. Fortunately, Banks has plenty of time to work on the project. Unfortunately, that means eager fans will have to be patient, as the film about the colorful, all-female A cappella group isn’t slated for release until 2015. In the meantime, people can catch up on their “Cup Song,” so that they’re ready to jam out when the movie hits theaters.
