Margie Patton Staff Writer@MargiePatton PopWrapped readers may be aware of the shocking legislation that was recently enacted in Uganda and Nigeria criminalizing gay sex and relationships. Politicians, business leaders, religious figures, and celebrities across the world such as John Kerry, Richard Branson, Whoopi Goldberg and George Takei have spoken out against the legislation, calling for a repeal of the laws and protection for members of all nations regardless of sexual orientation. UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay reacted to the Nigerian Anti-Same Sex Law with the words, “Rarely have I seen a piece of legislation that in so few paragraphs directly violates so many basic, universal human rights.” And now, at the risk of their own safety, Nigeria’s LGBT community is speaking out themselves, and asking you to add your voice to the cries of outrage. In conjunction with the Gay Rights organization All Out, Nigeria’s “Solidarity Alliance” is asking the global community to sign a petition to show the Nigerian government that the world will not tolerate their deplorable treatment of their own people. The petition calls on the Nigerian Government, the National Assembly, the Attorney General and the Police to:
- Stop all cases of arrests and persecution of people based on perceived or real sexual orientation.
- Investigate and prosecute cases of incitement to violence against LGBT people
- Ensure access to justice for victims of mob justice and arbitrary arrests.
