Dreamgirls is coming to London and your favorite songstress
Mercedes Jones from Glee Amber Riley is set to play the role of Effie!
It has been announced by The Daily Mail that Riley will make her West End debut in November of 2016. The first time the Glee-actress performed something from Dreamgirls was in Season 1 of the infamous show, when Mercedes Jones interprets the beautiful song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”.
Dreamgirls is not only a 2006 released film starring Beyonce; it is also a 1981 Broadway musical, which has won a Tony Award (Jennifer Holliday – Effie). The show closed in 1985 for two years and further returned with Tony winner Lillias White as Effie.
The film version was directed by Bill Condon and earned a Golden Globe Award for "Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical" as well as an Oscar for the legendary Jennifer Hudson, also in the role of Effie.
Amber Riley now follows the footsteps of incredibly famous ladies, and we all are confident that she will be able to keep up! Amber Riley first came to global attention playing Mercedes Jones in Glee, as whom she was featured in 6 seasons as well as a world tour and some guest appearances in other TV-shows.
During her run in Glee, Riley won the famous dancing show Dancing with the Stars with Derek Hough in 2013. Her stage credits include The Wiz Live!, where she played Addaperle, Hair at the Hollywood Bowl and Cotton Club Parade at City Center. The latter further became After Midnight on Broadway; however, Riley did not remain with the show.
We have been fond of Amber Riley since 2009 and will support her even when she hops across the pond! Playing the famous role of Effie in Dreamgirls, there are quite some expectations, which we are sure Riley will fulfill!
Best of luck to you, Amber!
