American Idol Recap: Who Makes Coveted Top 5? | American Idol

We're nearing the finish line everybody!!! After last weeks shocking elimination of Joey Cook, and the confrontation between Quentin Alexander and Harry Connick Jr, one had to wonder what was in store for tonight. The top 6 were anxiously awaiting their fates as the night kicked off while Ryan Seacrest welcomed us to the show along with Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry. Ryan revealed tonight's theme was Arena Anthems, and the first person up? 1. Jax - "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet What a way to kick off the show........except the crowd didn't seem into it. Jax exploded on stage with her Jet cover, and I felt the performance as a whole was fantastic, but the crowd didn't seem as receptive. She sounded great, she looked fantastic, and the song really fit her voice. he judges all loved it, with even Harry praising her power on stage. Let's hope he's in a good mood. 2. Nick Fradiani - "Harder to Breathe" by Maroon 5 After a bumpy intro (it seemed Nick missed the cue or the band was off), it was smooth sailing throughout the rest because Nick NAILED this!! The judges commended Nick on his vocal and the fact that with each passing week, he's gotten better & better. GREAT performance!! 3. Clark Beckham - "Yesterday" by The Beatles Not sure how this was an arena anthem, but I officially don't care, because this was FLAWLESS. Clark's vocals reached an all time high this week with his Beatles cover and every single note absolutely hit the right spots. Simply put? Incredible. The 4th spot went to Tyanna Jones, which now meant Quentin Alexander and Rayvon Owen would battle in the FINAL Fan Save for that 5th spot. Would Quentin's altercation with Harry last week come back to haunt him? And can I get an AMEN on this being the last fan save?! 4. Tyanna Jones - "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus On paper, this should have worked, but unfortunately the vocal wasn't strong enough for yours truly. Tyanna seemed very comfortable with the track, which played in her favor, but it was one of her weakest vocals. However, the judges loved it...... So what do I know? 5. Quentin Alexander - "Light My Fire" - by The Doors The man may have made some enemies last week, but tonight? THAT VOCAL WAS FIRE!!! The song selection was on point and for me it was one of Quentin's best performances of the season. It suited 6. Rayvon Owen - "I'm Not The Only One" by Sam Smith Once again, a STELLAR vocal from Rayvon and he completely made it his own. It's a mystery to me how Rayvon consistently ends up in the bottom, but he must still have a lot of fans out there. Time for round 2!! 1. Nick Fradiani - "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart  Nick had one HELL of a night!! With his first number and the Stewart cover, Nick positioned himself at the top of the pack right along with Clark. His energy is growing every week and I can see a clear picture of the kind of artist that Nick will be post-Idol. 2. Tyanna Jones - "Heaven" by Bryan Adams Ugh. One of yours truly's all time favorite songs, and this was NOT what I wanted. I LOVE Tyanna, I really do, but this was not good. Her confidence was on point, but unfortunately the vocal was really off. The judges seemed to skirt the issue of the vocal, in praise of how she looked and how mature the song selection was. 3. Clark Beckham - "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber There's always a moment in every season of "American Idol" when a contestant takes on an unlikely track and SLAYS it. Clark had that moment!!! And the judges had to crap on  it. Harry and Keith had the biggest issue with the performance, simply saying that Clark has set the bar too high for himself and this fell short. 4. Jax - "White Flag" by Dido EXQUISITE. Jax pulled out all of the (vocal) stops for her final song of the night and I loved every second of it. The song fit her perfectly, and she captivated right from the beginning. 5. Quentin Alexander - "Shake it Out" by Florence & the Machine Critique time. While Quentin sounded great, which was no surprise, it was the arrangement I had an issue with. I understand that the songs get cut to just over a minute long, it hurt the Florence track We'll see if Quentin move on to the Top 5. 6. Rayvon Owen - "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac Now THERE is a swerve!!! Rayvon left the ballad behind and gave us a different side of himself and yours truly really enjoyed it. He captured the fun, and he ate up all of the crowd's support. Rayvon has been down numerous times but he keeps bouncing back to give us some of the best vocals of the entire competition. Was this vocally perfect? No, but that's not the point. His charisma poured through and I loved every second of it. It was time though. After the final Fan Save of the season, Ryan had the results in his hand and was time for the decision: And once again, Rayvon slid through!!! It was elimination for Quentin Alexander, and one has to wonder if last week's MOMENT was his ultimate downfall. We now have our top 5!!! What do you guys think?
