American Psycho Author Approves Of Matt Smith As Patrick Bateman In Musical

The original novel’s author, Bret Easton Ellis has come out in strong support for the recent casting of Matt Smith in the upcoming musical adaptation of American Psycho.

“Happy about Matt Smith in AMERICAN PSYCHO: THE MUSICAL but I also liked the idea of runner-up Andrew Rannells in the role. Maybe Broadway…” he told the twitterverse not long ago.

As we previously reported, our Whovian fave, Matt Smith, will be playing the male lead – Patrick Bateman – in the show when it hits theatres December 3 for previews.

According to Ellis, Andrew Rannells was also in the running to take on the role. Most famous for being part of the award winning cast of Book of Mormon, we too think that Rannells would make a terrific alternate lead if/when the production moves to Broadway after finishing up in the West End.

Rehearsals began on Monday with Smith joining a stellar cast, including: Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner.

It seems as though American Psycho is certainly making a comeback. The 1991 novel spawned a movie version in 2000 but is also being reworked as a television series for FX on top of this new theatre adaptation. The musical will be staged at the Almeida Theatre in London, and tickets are currently on sale for previews (December 3 to December 11) and for the official grand opening, December 12.

If you’re interested in seeing the show, which looks like it should be amazing, then you can book over the phone on 020 7359 4404 or in person if you’re a local. Preview tickets cost between £8 and £26, whilst post December 12 tickets cost between £10 and £45.

Get in there fast if you’re eager because the show will only run until January 25 next year. Fingers crossed it will then move to Broadway (if it’s a success in the West End).

It seems to have all the ingredients for a great production with Roberto Aguirre Sacasa helming the book adaptation, Duncan Sheik sorting the music and lyrics and Rupert Goold directing.

We can’t wait to hear some reviews once the previews start.

In the meantime here’s the trailer for American Psycho (the movie):
