It's the season six finale of Modern Family this week, and it started with the main theme of the season: Alex's graduation!

The entire family gathered to celebrate Alex's achievements except for Phil who got an untimely ear infection on a business trip to Seattle and could not fly home. All was not lost though, as Phil was there, via screen.

Claire got Alex a special present to celebrate, but Phil does not understand the mother-daughter gesture. In true sitcom fashion, just before Claire could give Alex the gift, Uncle Mitch swooped in with a handmade scrapbook that brought Alex to tears.  Claire swiftly comes up with a Plan B, but is quickly thwarted by Jay's gift: a trip to Europe for the summer. Claire then falls to Plan C, Phil's 'lame' song, but his speakers fail and whilst Claire is fixing this, Gloria gives an emotional toast honouring Alex as the first person in the family to truly accept her.

Haley has decided to move on from Andy as his girlfriend, Beth, was in town and she was really nice. But as soon as Andy left the room, Beth gave Haley an indirect yet terrifying warning to stay away from him. Haley believes Beth to be psychotic, naturally not being believed by her family, especially after a series of mishaps that suggested that Beth was out to get Haley.  Andy is slightly confused over his feelings; he has been getting signals that Beth wants him to propose, but he also feels he has a connection with Haley. Haley then realizes that she loves him too, but it is too late, Andy has left to propose to Beth, neither of them knowing how the other feels.

Phil uses his new 'robot' body- wheels and an iPad- to tell Mitch and Cam that their offer on the upstairs apartment has been accepted, meaning they can finally expand. As it happens, Mitch had been laid off and unemployed for a month, but there is a silver lining: he has made a new friend, Spencer, who helped him get over his lifelong fear of birds. Cam gets suspicious of Mitch's secretive behavior, drawing the conclusion that Mitch was having an affair, fueled by Cam's adult braces. Cam confronts him, and Mitch admits that he has been laid off, which does not bother Cam as he is so glad there is no other man.
