Anchorman 2 Tops The US Box Office As The Legend Continues To Draw In the Crowds

The last Friday at the box office before Christmas resulted in Ron Burgundy returning to the top spot, nearly a full decade after the first Anchorman hit theaters. Raking in $8.7 million, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues took the top spot from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which made $8.61 million in its second week. Filling out the rest of the top five are non-sequel movies American Hustle ($6.3 million), Frozen ($5.12 million), and Saving Mr. Banks ($2.96 million).

It’s certainly not the number Will Ferrell and Adam McKay were hoping for, especially after an especially strong opening on Wednesday where initial predictions had them looking towards an opening weekend close to $40 million. Alas, that was not the case and one can’t help but wonder if many moviegoers felt like they had seen so much Ron Burgundy between Dodge Durango commercials and other promotional spots, that there wasn’t a need to pay money to go see more of him.
