Rovio Entertainment announced today that they had locked in two very experienced handlers for their upcoming Angry Birds full-length, 3D CG-animated feature film: Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly. Both Kaytis and Reilly are veterans in the animation industry, but the upcoming feature will see both of them make their directorial debuts. Clay Kaytis has been an employee with Disney for 19 years and has most recently worked as the animation supervisor for Tangled and as an animator on Wreck-It Ralph. Fergal Reilly has been with Sony Pictures Animation since 2003 and was the storyboard artist on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania. Commenting on the announcement, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said, “I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise. They are two of the brightest rising talents in animation, and I’m confident we are building the right team to tell the story of Angry Birds and deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.” Also signed on to the project are producers John Cohen (Despicable Me) and Catherine Winder. David Maisel, former Marvel Studio’s boss is executive producing, and Jon Vitti, the Emmy award winning writer from King Of The Hill and The Simpsons, is slated to write the screenplay. Angry Birds is one of the world’s largest entertainment franchises. Beginning in 2009, the mobile game has topped the charts in over 100 countries across the globe and inspired a weekly animated series, Angry Bird Toons, which in its first seven months has surpassed 1,000,000,000 (yes, that’s one billion) of views and remains the number one paid app of all time. Angry Birds is scheduled for a worldwide release on July 1, 2016.
