Animal Planet is giving us a rare look at an extraordinary event, as they will be broadcasting the birth of a baby giraffe live as it happens.

Katie, one of the most popular and friendly giraffes of the herd residing at the Dallas Zoo, is due to give birth any day. Animal Planet and the Dallas Zoo have set up a series of eight cameras around Katie’s habitat, including the maternity stall. The feed from the cameras is being streamed 24 hours a day on Animal Planet’s website in anticipation of the event.

Katie is beloved at the Dallas zoo for being amongst the most friendly and expressive of the 12 giraffes in the zoo’s herd. She gets along well with both her trainers and the other giraffes in the herd, and is always eager to greet guests at the zoo’s hands on the “feed yard” platform. She also is very good at communicating with others.

“She is very good at communicating to me and the other keepers how she's feeling," says Allison Dean, Katie's main trainer. "She has expressive body movements and facial expressions. She can really tell you what she likes and doesn't like."

You can watch the feed of Katie’s habitat and sign up for alerts when the birth is imminent here.
