As Star Wars fans around the world eagerly scour sites for any new rumblings about the forthcoming trilogy, Lucasfilm appears to also be consolidating its forces to focus on the films and their time period with news out this week that the Cartoon Network’s animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is being axed and plans for the new animated comedy series, Star Wars Detours, have been put on hold. However, for fans of animated Star Wars, there was good news among the bad, with suggestions of a new series to complement the new trilogy in the works.

On March 11, Lucasfilm released the following statement, saying that:

As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come…

After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series. While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content.

Though the news for fans of the eagerly anticipated Star Wars Detours was not as hopeful. Detours, is a new comedy series from Seth Green, Matthew Senreich and Todd Grimes that is set between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. Fans were given a sneak peek of the animated series at last years’ Star Wars Celebration VI though no release date had been set. In the same press release it was announced that “in the wake of that decision [the release of the new trilogy], Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense. As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date’.

Along with the statement about the future of the two animated series, Lucasfilm released a video where Supervising Director of The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni, offers a peek of what is to come in that series.

How do you feel about the end of The Clone Wars and the postponement of Detours? What do you think Lucasfilm could have up their sleeves with a new series? Let us know your thoughts below.
