Anne Hathaway Controls A Giant Monster In Colossal

Colossal stars Hathaway as an alcoholic party girl in the US who is shocked that she has a link with a massive beast causing havoc in South Korea.

What could be more unconventional than a giant monster? How about a giant monster controlled by a drunk Anne Hathaway? Colossal, coming April 7, 2017, is directed by Nacho Vigalondo (V/H/S Viral, The ABCs of Death) and stars Hathaway as an alcoholic party girl in the US who is shocked to discover that she has a telepathic link with a massive beast causing havoc in South Korea.

It’s definitely a departure for the star, who you may be more used to seeing in Les Misérables, The Devil Wears Prada, or The Princess Diaries. For Hathaway, however, this film doesn’t feel like a departure from who she is as a person.

“I would have loved this movie and felt so cool knowing it existed,” said Hathaway to IndieWire after the film’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, “I did this one for my 16-year-old self.”

The film’s unique premise and indie comedy atmosphere is already turning heads. CNET’s review, for example, calls it “A monster mash-up of indie comedy and kaiju carnage, it’s like Pacific Rim except with dive bars instead of multi-story mech suits.”

It’s because of this genre-mashing story that Hathaway decided to join the film in the first place, in spite of the fact that she knew how Hollywood would react. After all, without fitting into a clearly marked category, movies like these are difficult to market. That being said, having debuted at Fantastic Fest last year, the film has already earned positive reviews. Hathaway, meanwhile, has complete faith in the audience’s ability to enjoy such a quirky film. Check out the trailer below.

“This movie doesn’t have a clear genre, and I think the audience trusted that and understood that it’s okay to laugh and go to a more emotional, powerful place. They don’t negate each other.”
