Looks like one of Tinseltown’s biggest friendships might be turning into a healthy competition. It has been reported that Benedict Cumberbatch is in line to replace Tom Hardy in upcoming drama EverestDeadline was the first to report the latest casting news surrounding the upcoming film.

According to Deadline, scheduling conflicts have now forced Hardy to pull out, with Cumberbatch the frontrunner to replace him. Cumberbatch is apparently not the only one being considered for the lead role.

Close friend and fellow British thespian Tom Hiddleston is among several actors who are also in the running to take the lead in Everest. Both Cumberbatch and Hiddleston are on a list that includes X-Men‘s James McAvoy, Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill, Matthew Goode, Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens and Joel Kinnaman. These actors are also reportedly being considered to co-star as rival Australian climber George Finch along with playing Mallory.

Doug Liman’s biopic drama was set to star Hardy as British mountaineer George Mallory, who tried twice to scale Mount Everest in 1921 and 1922. The film is being produced by Jennifer Klein along with Liman and his Hypnotic partner Dave Bartis.

Sheldon Turner, who wrote Up in the Air,  adapted the script from Jeffrey Archer’s book Paths of Glory about Mallory, who disappeared along with his climbing partner Sandy Irvine on his third attempt in 1924, at age 37. He was last seen 600 feet from the top, and many believe that he made it before dying on the way back down the infamous peak. His body along with Irvine’s stayed up there until 1999.

Cumberbatch is currently keeping busy by filming Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game co-starring Keira Knightley and can currently be seen in theaters in The Fifth Estate. It was just announced earlier today that Cumberbatch’s series Sherlock would be returning to the tube on January 19th after a long hiatus.

Hiddleston, in the meantime, can been seen later on this month when Thor: The Dark World hits the cinemas in the UK on October 30 and in the US on November 8. Following the film’s premiere, Hiddleston will be heading to the West End in Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus. The actor will be hitting the big screen once again when he begins production on Crimson Peak in February after recently replacing Cumberbatch in the film.
