Joseph Morgan, who plays Klaus in The Vampire Diaries, says that fans are confused by his character.
Klaus is the original vampire hybrid (vampire and werewolf) and one of the Originals – his mother Esther cast an immortality spell on him and his siblings, creating the first vampires. He is believed to be one of the most hated and feared of all the originals, and those who fear him are desperate for his approval.
The character started out in Season 2 as one of the main antagonists, but has now become more of an anti-hero through his friendship with Caroline.
“I get a lot of confused reactions,” Morgan joked, “Like, ‘I know I’m really supposed to hate you, but I really love you. But I hate what you are doing,’” reports Digital Spy.
Morgan revealed that playing Klaus is the “ultimate job” because he has “always been obsessed with gothic fantasy and that genre.”
In fact, Morgan states that upon hearing that he was going to play Klaus, he called a friend and said, “I play one of the oldest vampires in the world, I’m actually kind of half werewolf as well.” To which he claims his friends replied “Are you writing this yourself?”
Before we conclude, let’s just point out what everyone’s thinking: Maybe the confusion Morgan talks about stems from the fact that he is almost too gorgeous to hate. Just look at that smoulder.
Morgan is set to star in spinoff The Originals October 15.
