When you have something that’s practically perfect in every way, why go and mess with it?

Disney has announced a new installment in the Mary Poppins story — notably NOT a sequel to the Julie Andrews classic from 1964 — that will take place 20 years after the original film. The Mary Poppins we all know and love was created from the first of an eight book series by P.L. Travers, and the new film will take from these same tales. It will see Mary traveling to more families in need of the perfect nanny.

Banking on the success of 2014’s Into the Woods, Disney plans on using the same director/producers combo of Rob Marshall and John DeLuca and Marc Platt, respectively.

Viewers should expect the setting to be a bit more grim and gritty than Mary Poppins ever was, taking place in Depression-era London. I can only assume that opens the door for even more creative magic as Mary helps families learn and bond.

What do you say? Do you think Disney has a magical, bottomless carpet bag out of which to pull endless Poppins stories? Should they leave well enough alone and let our childhoods stay as pristine as we remember them?
