Argentina and other Latin American countries gathered in several cities on Wednesday, June 3rd, united by one common goal: to raise awareness for violence against women.
This demonstration is an extension of the online campaign #NiUnaMenos, meaning Not One Less, which was born from the outrage citizens were feeling over highly publicized homicide cases, most notably the murder of a pregnant 14-year-old girl.
The statistics of femicide advertised by the campaign organizers are devastating. Organizers of the campaign have reported that nearly 2,000 girls were murdered in the last 7 years in Argentina alone, not to mention that a woman is murdered every 30 hours.
The campaign asks the Argentinian government to commit to further raising awareness through education by talking about sex education, offering free access to legal representation, and for the victims to be protected, among other similar demands.
Many supporters from all over the world took the time to show their support on social media platforms such as Twitter. Even Argentina’s own president, Cristina Kirchner, tweeted her support of the cause, including the hashtag #NiUnaMenos.
Let’s hope that these events and resulting demonstrations are enough to convince governments to take a firmer stand against femicide and gender violence.
