No one likes that sinking feeling of discovering that Baskin Robbins has discontinued your favorite flavor….or that your best friend has been transferred to another school…..or in the case of many loyal Lifetime viewers, that Army Wives has been given the axe. After seven seasons full of laughter, drama, and tears, the network revealed on Tuesday that the popular serial will not be returning for another season.
While many fans take this news as a crushing blow, others may not be completely surprised. Speculation on the future of the show was abuzz in June of this year. The season seven finale was relatively upbeat with no major cliffhangers or dangling plot lines. If anything, the characters were being lined up for perhaps a “next generation”-type spin-off series, with the season seven entrance of cast members Jesse McCartney and Brooke Shields.
Any expectation of the series finale, however, did not stop the outpouring of response to this news from fans and professionals alike. Audience members perhaps feel such a close kinship to the show as it portrays situations experienced by many military families today, such as PTSD and the heartache of separation by deployment. Lifetime Network’s Vice President Rob Sharenow acknowledged last week that Army Wives is “a very special program…that connects with viewers and resonates so powerfully.” Few programs dealing with such relevant issues today can boast of such a connection and viewer following. This appreciation is not lost at all on the show’s actors.
Brian McNamara immediately took to Twitter to emotionally thank the show’s fanbase for their continued support. One can only predict that similar declarations will continue to show up across various platforms of social media.
Consolation of this sad news, however, comes in the form of a retrospective of the show in the works. The two hour special plans to feature a cast member reunion as well as a look back at the memorable moments that have gained Army Wives such a loyal following. Fans can look forward to the retrospective special airing early next year.
Army Wives holds the distinction of being Lifetime Network’s longest running drama to date, and will undoubtedly be missed by viewers. However, fans must not forget that Baskin Robbins does bring back retired flavors, friends can certainly move back into town, and TV has a way of repeating hit formulas. Perhaps another future hit may be on the way before long? Till then, we salute Army Wives for an honorable and certainly enjoyable run.
