The film August Rush is on the path to becoming a Broadway production, joining films on stage like Legally Blonde and Shrek.

The movie, originally starring Freddie Highmore and the late Robin Williams, is about a boy named Evan Taylor who has amazing musical talents. He runs away from a foster home to find his (also musically talented) parents, while they search for him and each other. The tale finds him in New York City, where he meets all sorts of colorful characters as he “follows the music” to find his family. Also in the film are Keri Russell, Terrence Howard, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The production is set to be directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, known for his work on Sweeney Todd. A closed door developmental workshop will be held December  9-10, featuring prominent stage actors like Terrence Mann, Isabel Keating, Alexander Gemignani and Mark Jacoby. The book was written by Glen Berger and Mark Mancina, who composed the music for the original film and won Grammys for his work on The Lion King and Tarzan. Sam Pinkleton has been chosen as choreographer, with Kimberly Grigsby joining him as musical director.

No set timeline has been announced yet regarding the production.
