Moana Star Auli’i Cravalho Lands Role In Upcoming NBC Pilot

Moana star Auli’i Cravalho is set to star in upcoming NBC Pilot ‘Drama High’, produced by Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller.

Grab your backpacks, Disney fans! It looks like Moana is headed to high school — or, at least, her voice is!

After bringing down the house with a stunning performance of the Oscar-nominated song “How Far I’ll Go,” Auli’i Cravalho — voice of Disney’s newest princess, Moana — seems to be on a winning streak. Earlier this morning, it was announced that the 16 year-old up-and-coming actress would be taking on a role in an upcoming pilot for NBC, this time in the flesh.

The series, entitled Drama High, is based on Mark Sokolove’s book Drama High: The Incredible True Story of a Brilliant Teacher, a Struggling Town, and the Magic of Theater, which follows real life teacher Lou Volpe and his experiences leading a local drama department. As stated in the series’ production notes, “Inspired by a true story, Drama High introduces us to an extraordinary working class high school drama department and the incredible students who come alive under a passionate teacher and family man whose dedication to the program galvanizes the entire town.”

Cravalho, who hadn’t so much as sung in church choir before landing the role of a lifetime as Disney’s island princess, will make her TV acting debut as Lilette — a student of Mr. Volpes.

And the big names don’t stop there! Fans of the Broadway sensation Hamilton will recognize the show’s producer, Jeffrey Seller, who produced the well-known musical, in addition to other Broadway hit’s like Avenue Q, Rent, and In The Heights.

The show itself will be part of a 2016 production deal between Seller and Universal Television. Stated Seller in a 2016 interview, “I’ve been obsessed with storytelling since the fourth grade. Having now spent over 30 years telling stories on stage, I’m excited by the opportunity Bob has given me (and Flody) to stretch my muscles and apply my craft to television.”

As of now, no production timeline has been released.
