Having to wait weeks, if not months, to see new episodes of your favourite overseas series used to be the bane of every fangirl/boy’s life. Unless you wanted to be irrevocably spoiled you had to avoid certain sites and discussion boards/groups until your country had finally caught up with the times. Now with the advent of social media, it’s even harder to exist in a world knowing new episodes exist out there.
In order to address this issue, not to mention try to combat illegal downloads, a number of countries are now “fast tracking” series so new episodes air not long after they do in their country of origin. One lucky group of fans where this will occur for are the Gleeks. With expectations high for season five, especially the first three episodes which address the Kurt/Blaine relationship, Rachel Berry’s Funny Girl
callback and the death of series favourite, Finn Hudson, it’s unsurprising that Australian and UK TV bosses have decided to air new episodes of Glee
not long after the US screenings.
UK gleeks were outraged last year when Sky1 delayed the screening of season 4 until the beginning of 2013. At the time, Sky bosses released a statement
"We originally thought that the majority of our customers would want to see Glee
as soon as possible, but last year you gave us feedback about the constant breaks in scheduling (owing to one-off broadcasts of live sport and other events in the US) and told us you wanted a more consistent scheduling pattern. We listened to the feedback and have decided to begin showing season 4 in January 2013, so we can play out in an unbroken run."
Fans have been anxious to know whether something similar would be occurring this year, but breathed a sigh of relief today when GleeonSky tweeted the following announcement:
While the UK fans have to wait a week to see the new episodes, those down under have only a scant few hours between screenings in the US and in Australia. ELEVEN will be fast tracking the first three episodes, premiering Friday September 27 at 7.30pm.
What is unclear at the moment is whether both countries will continue to work with this schedule once Glee
returns to US following the baseball.
season 5 opens with a massive two-part Beatles special, before the special Finn Hudson tribute episode. It premieres in the US on September 26.
