Rumours have been circulating about a sequel to the anti-Christmas movie, but the baddest of Santas might not be making a return after all.
It turns out Billy Bob Thornton might have jumped the gun a little when he spread the word that, according to Deadline, he wanted to start filming Bad Santa 2 in the fall of 2013. Thornton said in an interview with Collider that though the sequel is being worked on, it is not as far in production as he might have let on, and, in fact, may not happen at all.
“I think our mistake, and certainly my mistake, was that when people heard about it on the internet or in interviews, they would ask me, ‘Are you guys doing Bad Santa?’ and I would say, ‘Oh, yeah, we’re gonna do it this fall,’” Thornton told Collider.
The sequel has been in the works since 2009, six years later after the release of the original Bad Santa, where Thornton plays a criminal posing as a mall Santa Claus in order to have the opportunity to rob the mall vault on Christmas Eve.
So can we expect a Bad Santa 2? The answer is maybe yes, and maybe no.
“The fact of the matter is, we may be doing it. They are working on it. It could be the end of this coming year, or it could be next year, or never. That’s the real honest answer,” Thornton admitted.
Thornton has said that he wants to reprieve his character for the sequel, which Entourage creator Doug Ellis agreed to rewrite the script for in May.
