“Stop being bossy!”
“Why are girls so bossy all the time?”

These phrases and multiple variations of them are said all over the world on playgrounds, in classrooms and even in the workplace. The connotation behind the word ‘bossy’ is that it is a girl who is assertive and wants to take on a leadership position, and that makes her a target.

Well, now there is a campaign to ban the word “bossy.” Headed by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, the public service campaign aims to end the use of bossy to degrade young girls and to encourage them to lead. Celebrities such as Beyoncé, Jennifer Garner, Jane Lynch and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have joined onto the campaign.

In a video PSA that aired on Lifetime, Beyoncé said “Be brave, be you. I’m not bossy, I’m the boss.” Those few words are enough to make young girls realize that there is nothing wrong with being assertive and taking control.

“[And] it has such a strongly female, and such a strongly negative connotation, that we thought the best way to raise awareness was to say, ‘This isn’t a word we should use. Let’s start encouraging girls to lead’,” Sandberg said in an interview with All Things Considered.

What do you think: should we ban “bossy” or is it just a harmless playground taunt?

Take a look at Beyonce, Jane Lynch, Jennifer Garner, Condoleezza Rice, Diane Von Furstenberg and Sheryl Sandberg, with some support from a couple men, encourage young girls to persevere and not be squashed by the limitations of society below.
