Welcome to Boston aka Beantown, dance fans! Let’s get down to the B-Town auditions, judged by Nigel, Mary, and SYTYCD favorite and my personal fave regular judge (please come back, Shankers!!) Adam Shankman!
ASHLEY GOLDMAN, 19 AND PHILLIP KUDRAYAVSTEV, 19
This best friend duo takes the stage. Their speciality is ballroom. Phillip is apparently a Dancing With The Stars:Ballroom Battle champion. Nigel thinks they’re tremendous (his fave word) as partners, and Mary agrees that they are brilliant (as is their chemistry). Adam, however, points out that Phillip clearly still has the hots for Ashley (he was scoping out her bum). It’s Vegas for these kids.
NATALIE VILOS, 29
A jazz dancer who’s looking to stand out by dancing with a damn lampshade…Total facepalm here. It’s a big fat no for this dancer.
JOHN TESORIERO, 21
This b-boy brings a beatboxer to help him out with his audition for some originality. The judges appreciate that. I don’t personally but his friend has some skills in that department. They send him to choreo to see what he can do there.
KATLYN RODRIGUEZ, 18
After her partner bailed on her, this ballroom dancer’s little brother stepped up to the plate and learned her routine in 3 hours. Katlyn and her brother lit up the floor, with her bro standing out and making the judges happy. They all hope to see him in 3 years. As for Katlyn, they like her and send her to choreo to see what else she can do.
JENNIFER JONES, 21
Once a ballerina, Jennifer has past experience with eating disorders. She switched to Jazz, and all her problems went away. There’s a comparison to Jennifer Beals (she looks like the blonde version of her) which results in a dirty old man joke from Nigel (think Flashdance). The girl can dance and Mary thinks Jennifer is so So You Think You Can Dance she can’t even stand it. She’s Vegas bound.
TOMMY TIBBALL, 21
Tommy is one member of a dance-loving family. Tommy brings his contemporary routine to the show and has Adam saying “oh my god” before his audition’s even over. Nigel says he hasn’t seen feet like that since Jakob Karr and Billy Bell (just love, love, love those two guys). It’s Vegas for him as well!
JENNIE BEGLEY, 24
This ballet dancer almost didn’t make it to the auditions due to money problems (welcome to the club). Luckily for her, her big bro makes sure she gets there (I teared up). Adam tells Mary, “She’s the real deal.” Jennie’s audition brings both Adam and Mary to their feet and me to my Kleenex box as she gets sent to Vegas and her bro starts to cry.
Day one ends with a choreography round. John doesn’t make it through and Katlyn owes her little brother big time as she does; straight to Vegas along with seven more dancers representing Boston.
JASON KIDD, 19
Jason finally feels he’s ready for SYTYCD. And ready he is, the remarkable animator that he is. The judges all three head on stage to give Jason not one, but three tickets to Vegas. I would have done the same thing. Mad props.
SHANNON “SHIZZY SHAKE” TARANTINO, 21
A contemporary dancer with a wicked cool hairstyle, Shannon is a quick favorite of Adam’s (mine too!). He loves her sense of effortlessness and thinks she’s quite perfect. Shankers and crew send her straight to Vegas.
ELENA AND GENE BERSTEN, 29 & 25
Gene, who originally auditioned in season six, is back, and this time, he’s bringing his wife with him. Mary thinks the couple is fantastic. Shankers and Nigel dig them too so it’s off to Vegas for the pair.
ERNEST E-KNOCK PHILLIPS, 26
The season three favorite is back! E-Knock gives a very emotional performance. Nigel thinks he’s an artist and thanks him for keeping it real (well then, Nigel). Adam calls it one of most vulnerable auditions ever on the show and comments on E-Knock’s incredibly high Russian jump (my eyes were in disbelief). It’s to choreo for him!
ALEXIS JULIANO, 18
Representing tappers, Alexis hopes to show that tap can elicit emotion instead of just serving as entertainment. Nigel compliments him as we all know he loves his tappers. It’s straight to Vegas for this one!
ANTHONY BRYANT, 28
He’s baaack! In season one, he was the not-so-masculine ribbon dancer (Remember that?). In season four, he was the camo-clad dancer with a serious attitude problem (I wanted to kick him). And in season 10, he’s the not-so-humble dancer with an attitude problem (what an ass). After telling him he is a beautiful dancer and that he’s on the right track and agree to send him to choreo..until Anthony stops them and claims, “I actually don’t want to continue then.” SERIOUSLY? Why waste your time and theirs? No class. UGH.
ANTHONY SAVOY, 24
Anthony is a very humble ballet dancer, who is potentially going to get in a lot of trouble with his company if he’s successful today. Guess he better make that call since he was AMAZING with his lines! This ballet dancer is going to Vegas!
KATE KAPSHANDY, 23
Dancing with Max from season five, Kate puts a lot of pressure on herself from the start. Mary being Mary, screams hot tamale at her and Shankers awkwardly hits on her LOL It’s straight to Vegas for her!
TOSHIHIKO NAKAZAWA, 28
Although he can’t understand much of what the judges are saying, Toshihiko brings a little hip-hop, locking, popping, animation, and even breaking to his audition. Toshihiko really makes an impact on the judges. I’m impressed myself. He’s Vegas bound too!
At the end of day two, E-Knock isn’t strong enough to make it through choreography (insert sad face). Eleven more dancers are headed to Vegas though at the end of the day.
