A slap in the face or a backhanded compliment? Calvin Klein is claiming that soccer superstar, David Beckham, was simply too popular to star in a previous underwear advertising campaign in the UK.

Marc Jacobs spoke to Klein about the Beckham campaign in Interview magazine. Klein explained that he had in fact offered Beckham the UK campaign but his representatives declined to accept.

It is thought that this is why the 38-year-old football legend will not appear in Klein’s underwear campaign in the UK, even though Beckham was deemed suitable to feature in a worldwide campaign excluding the UK.

Beckham’s people reportedly told Klein’s company, “You can have him for the rest of the world, but you can’t have the UK because he’s too popular [there].”

Rather than inferring that Beckham is too popular amongst the public, his representation may have been referring to the multiple fashion labels that have been vying for David to launch their campaigns.

He has since gone on to star in a Giorgio Armani’s massive campaign, before launching his own underwear collaboration with H&M. Swiftly becoming a staple in men’s fashion, David Beckham uncovered his latest H&M endeavor last week – the Autumn 2013 Bodywear Collection.

One thing’s for certain… We’ll be seeing lots of Becks undressed to impress.
