Bette Midler To Portray Mae West In

Stephanie Blackmon

Staff Writer

Bette Midler has signed on to play the role of Mae West in an HBO biopic, reports Deadline. Based on West’s autobiography, Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It, the biopic will be written by Harvey Fierstein, directed by William Friedkin and produced by Jerry Weintraub. West rose to fame for being one of the most controversial movie stars of her time after writing and starring in her own Broadway show, Sex, which led to her eventual prosecution and a 10 day prison stint for “corrupting the morals of youth.” She led a successful career on-screen as well as on Broadway, and she was one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood at the time. The biopic will focus around West’s early years of legal issues for her show Sex during her time on stage in Gotham. While the HBO biopic has not been given the official word for broadcast, it is currently in development. Midler, whose last movie was Parental Guidance, can currently be seen in her one-woman Broadway show, I’ll Eat You Last. The show is running in Los Angeles, and is about the Hollywood agent Sue Mengers.
