We continue our FOX appreciation days on the network's 30th birthday week with one of its most successful shows. For those of us who grew up in the 90s, Beverly Hills 90210 was the definite teen soap opera. Not only was it entertaining and totally addicting but young people could relate to a number of issues the characters had to face. Topics such as teen pregnancy, shoplifting, drug use, anorexia and much more were covered on the show. Even though the ratings were up and down, characters left and new ones were introduced, the show remained an iconic favourite which lasted over 10 seasons.
The show aired on FOX from 1990 to 2000 and was created by Darren Star, who also brought us Sex and the City, and produced by Aaron Spelling, Tori Spelling's father. The show spawned four other series with characters linked to Beverly Hills 90210 and even an unauthorised Lifetime movie.
But whatever happened to the original main cast? Read on to find out.
1. Shannen Doherty
In the 90s, Shannen Doherty's popularity blossomed when she took on the role of Brenda Walsh, which made her a household name. Doherty lasted only four seasons before she was let go from the show, and, after that, she moved on to various TV films and other shows. There was one show, though, that revived her career, and that happened when she took on the role of Prue Halliwell on the popular WB series Charmed. Shannen returned to her role of Brenda in 2008 on the CW's 90210 reboot. She also appeared on Dancing with the Stars.
Earlier this year, the actress was diagnosed with breast cancer. Shannen has been keeping her fans updated on her progress via her social media accounts. The 45 year old actress is determined to fight the disease, and we are with her all the way. You can follow her here.
2. Jason Priestly
The only cast member to have been nominated for a Golden Globe, Priestly played the boy next door Brandon Walsh, brother to Brenda Walsh (Doherty), and, at only 20, he became quite the teen heartthrob. Now at 46, Jason currently directs, has written a memoir about his life entitled Jason Priestly: A Memoir and stars in the Canadian show Raising Expectations with Molly Ringwald. He is also happily married with two kids.
3. Jennie Garth
Blonde beauty Jennie Garth played Kelly Taylor for over 10 years. She's appeared in a number of TV films and also wrote a memoir entitled Deep Thoughts from a Hollywood Blonde. Garth successfully headlined another show, the WB’s What I Like About You alongside Amanda Bynes back in 2002. After that, she recurred in the CW's 90210 and got to the semi-finals of Dancing with the Stars.
In 2014, Jennie joined best friend and former cast mate Tori Spelling on ABC Family's comedy Mystery Girls, in which she not only starred but was also executive produced. Sadly, the show didn't get picked up for a second season due to less than stellar ratings. Garth is married and has three daughters from a previous relationship.
4. Ian Ziering
Ian Ziering played Steve Sanders. He's had a somewhat semi-successful career, particularly with the Sharknando franchise with Tara Reid. Like Shannen and Jennie, he also appeared on Dancing with the Stars back in 2010, where he made it to the semi-finals, although it wasn't a very pleasant experience for his partner Cheryl Burke.
According to Ian, a reunion was planned with the cast back in 2010, but no network wanted to show it.
5. Tori Spelling
Playing Donna on 90210 catapulted Tori's fame even further. Not only was she the daughter of Aaron Spelling who was the show's executive producer but she also had a few guests spots on Saved By the Bell, where she played Screech's girlfriend.
Tori and best friend Jennie Garth, as mentioned, had a short lived sitcom, Mystery Girls. She's also had her own reality show and is the author of several books.
Tori recently announced that she's expecting her fifth child with husband Dean McDermott.
6. Luke Perry
Perry came aboard as the brooding Dylan McKay as a supporting cast member but was so popular he was upped to a series regular from Season 2 onward. Like Priestly, Perry became a teen heartthrob scoring roles on films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He has had some TV roles after his departure from the show but nothing very noteworthy. Perry has also been known to distance himself from the show; his appearance on the Television Critics Association summer press tour in 2015 showed his dissatisfaction in discussing anything to do with 90210, even avoiding reporters' questions by responding, "It’s just not relevant to anything I’m doing. Next question."
He's starring as Fred Andrews, Archie's father, in the CW's Archie much-buzzed adaptation Riverdale, coming midseason.
7. Brian Austin Green
Brian starred as lovable DJ David Silver; and who can forget his most famous rap (YouTube it!)? Brian has had many roles in TV shows, including Smallville and Anger Management, and a couple of film roles as well. During the 90s, he and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (who also starred on the show) dated for a few years, after which he had a relationship with another co-star, Vanessa Marcil. The couple have a son together.
Nowadays, Brian may be more famous for his relationship with actress Megan Fox, with whom he has three children.
8. Gabrielle Carteris
Gabrielle Carteris was the oldest cast member at 29 years old when the show started. Gabrielle played the geeky and smart Andrea Zuckerman, a character who went through significant changes during the show's seasons. Gabrielle left the show in 1995 and had her own daytime talk show, which, sadly, only lasted one season. After that, she went on to star in a lot of made-for-TV movies and guest appearances on various TV shows. These days, Gabrielle was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild ‐ American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG - AFTRA). She is married and has two children.
9. Tiffani-Amber Thiessen
Most notably known for her good girl role as Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell, Tiffani joined the Beverly Hills 90210 cast when Shannen Doherty left the show. She played bad girl Valerie Malone, a family friend of the Walsh's who moves in with them for five seasons and made a guest appearance on the show's last season. During her time on the show, Tiffani would star in a lot of made-for-TV movies such as She Thought Alone, Sweet Dreams and Buried Secrets. She dated her co-star Brian Austin Green for a few years.
Tiffani has appeared on a number of TV movies and comedy shows, most notably on White Collar with Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay for six seasons. One of her most recent appearances was back in 2015 when she joined some of the cast of Saved by the Bell for a spoof on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She's married with two children and has her own cooking show on the Cooking Channel called Dinner at Tiffani's.
10. Carol Potter
Carol played Mrs. Cindy Walsh, mom to twins Brandon and Brenda, who was also the mother figure to other characters, especially Dylan. Potter left the show after its fifth season but made guest appearances here and there. After completing her studies in Family and Therapy, she became a licensed therapist and has been practicing mediation for nearly 35 years.
11. James Eckhouse
James played Mr. Walsh for five years and, then, made subsequent guest appearances during the next few years of the show. After 90210, Eckhouse has appeared in a number of well known TV series, most recently Masters of Sex.
Now, how about that famous intro?
