On February 4th, Rachel Frederickson was crowned winner of the fifteenth season of Biggest Loser with a weight loss of 155 lbs., equating to 60 percent of her original body weight. However, this drastic weight loss has sparked concerned all over the internet.

She was apparently eating “1600 calories and exercising for six hours each day” in the three months prior to being crowned winner.

Frederickson admitted to People magazine, “Maybe I was a little too enthusiastic in my training to get to the finale.”

Even though a 1600 calories diet is acceptable according to established guidelines for safe weight loss, combined with an extreme exercise routine, it becomes a very poor calorie consumption; also, the recommended physical activity per week for most adults is two hours and 30 minutes.

Frederickson’s trainer on the show, Dolvett Quince, was surprised by her weight loss. According to People, the trainer said, “the first thing that went through my mind was ‘that’s just too much’”.

However, producers say she was constantly monitored throughout her time in the show, including leading up to the finale: “Rachel passed all the required medical tests ensuring she was healthy”, says Dave Broome, the show’s executive producer.

The 24 year-old voice actress also said she is “very, very healthy”, in response to a question about whether she is currently suffering from an eating disorder.

Rapid weight loss can lead to health risks such as “loss of bone mass and increase in bone marrow fat” which can lead to fracture risk, heart attacks or high blood pressure, according to HuffPost.

At 5’4’’, her height-weight ratio puts her BMI at 18, below the threshold considered normal by doctors.
