The modeling world isn’t exactly known for it’s diversity, but like with all things, there will be change regardless of how small it may seem to be.

Joining others like Madeline Stewart, an eighteen year-old model with Down’s Syndrome, the bionic-armed model, Rebekah Marine, will be walking the FTL Moda runway on September 13th.

Marine was born without a right forearm, nearly ensuring that she couldn’t pursue a modeling career. Quickly giving up, she went back to school and held a full-time job. However, after being fitted for a prosthesis four years ago, she set her eyes back on her dream career after being persuaded by a friend. Since then, she’s appeared on Good Day Philadelphia and the Dawn Morning Show. In addition, she’s been mention in Cosmopolitan, the New York Post, and Mashable, just to name a few.

As of late, she’s an ambassador for the Lucky Fin Project. Joining forces with Miss Iowa 2013 Nicole Kelly, MMA Fighter Nick Newell, and Tony Memmel, they and the non-profit organization provides support for those with upper limb differences. Also, she’s an ambassador for Touch Bionics. With the help of Advanced Arm Dynamics in Philadelphia, they fit her with the i-limb, “one of the most advanced prosthetic hands in the world.”

Even with her latest successes, she’s fully aware that not all agencies won’t “take a look at her portfolio” due to her disability. Despite this, she continues to be an inspiration. “It’s so important to include more diverse models, because after all, one out of five people in America have a disability,” she tells Mashable. “We should be celebrating uniqueness, not conforming to what the media thinks is beautiful.”
