There was a time when Michael Keaton was looking to be the next big superstar - he was, after all, Batman in the franchise's best film. However, for some reason he never rose to superstardom and faded into obscurity. However, he is back this year in his first major leading role in years.
, Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a disgruntled actor who once played an iconic superhero and gained quite a bit of fame and exposure from it. However, soon after that, his career declines, and he continuously struggles to gain his place in the spotlight again - remind you of anyone? This is probably the most blatant case of meta-filmmaking in years, and the fact that Keaton is willing to parody himself in a way just makes Birdman
seem that much more brilliant.
However, the trailer for this film is far from the comedy goldmine the film seems to be - it is a dark, twisted tale of revenge, anger and frustration. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (the highly acclaimed director behind 21 Grams
), it is filmed to appear as one unbroken shot. Photographed by recent Academy Award winner Emmanuel Lubezki, the film looks absolutely stunning. Although it is difficult to extrapolate from a short two minute trailer, it is evident Birdman
is something really special.
will be released on October 17th, and stars Keaton along with Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, and Amy Ryan.
