Katy Perry’s newest song “Roar” was released just this weekend and is already stirring up some controversy. Fans and YouTube users have been commenting on the official lyric video that was released earlier today (August 12) and have shown some concerns that the track sounds very much like Sara Bareilles song “Brave.”
Critics claim that the “I Kissed a Girl” singer simply copied Bareilles. That may not be a good sign for the pop singer, especially with her album coming this fall.
But what exactly is the same? One tumblr user tried to show the similarities by layering the two tracks together. The mash up showcases that the two tracks do have a similar beat and backing track to support the vocals. Not to mention, both songs have the same message about being empowered and standing up for yourself. However, they both still bring their own style to their respective tracks.
Perry has heard “Brave” before. She praised the singer and the song a few months ago tweeting, “I heart you @Sarabareilles,” before linking to the music video. Bareilles has kept mum about Katy’s new song, only tweeting a simple and classy message: “All love, everybody. All love. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤.” From the looks of it, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood for now.
There’s no doubt that Katy Cats will stick by Katy Perry and support her either way. “Roar” is part of Katy Perry’s upcoming album “Prism” which is set to release on October 22.
