The Black Power Ranger is reporting for duty, and he will officially be joining the Pink and Red Rangers in a 2017 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers reboot. Earlier today (October 23), Lionsgate Entertainment made the announcement that Ludi Lin would be joining the battle against intergalactic evil. Casting directors unveiled the news on the film's official Instagram account, sharing a head shot of the actor alongside his new title.
Lin will be joining the previously announced Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery, who are respectively playing the roles of the Pink and Red Power Rangers in the highly anticipated reboot. We are still waiting on confirmation regarding the identities of the Blue and Yellow Power Rangers, though announcements have been proceeding rapidly over the last two weeks.
Earlier this month a rumored casting shortlist circulated across the internet, airing the purported casting choices for the Pink, Red, and Black Rangers. Although Scott was on the list, neither Montgomery nor Lin were shortlisted as candidates, calling doubt upon the validity of the information. Rumor had it that Lionsgate was looking to select relatively new faces to fill the roles of the young heroes, but that they would fill out the cast with some more renowned villains.
Thankfully casting directors have chosen to forsake racist casting decisions made in earlier renditions of the team. The earliest grouping of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers featured a black actor playing the Black Power Ranger and an Asian actress playing the role of the Yellow Power Ranger. It seems that this time around casting directors are less racially insensitive and will hopefully select a diverse group of heroes.
Once we have a full team assembled, hopefully Lionsgate will turn the attention towards what the Mighty Morphin' squad will be facing in the reboot. Will we be treated to a modern-day retelling of the original Rangers, or will we be experiencing a new story? Guess we'll have to wait and find out!
