Managing Editor

You can never have too many different releases of the Harry Potter series. At least, that is what Bloomsbury is hoping, as they have announced that all seven of the Harry Potter books are to be released in full-colour editions for the first time.

Bloomsbury Publishing announced this morning that award-winning artist, Jim Kay illustrated the editions. Kay was the 2012 winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal for his illustrations in Patrick Ness’, A Monster Calls.

Though the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will not be published until September 2015 (with each new book appearing annually), fans were given a sneak peek at what they can expect from the artist with the release of a drawing of Harry Potter himself.

Along with the book’s illustrations, Kay will also be designing the book jacket images for each book.

Speaking of his new commission, Kay said: “From my point of view it is, without doubt, the commission of a lifetime. To design the characters, the clothing, the architecture and landscapes to possibly the most expansive fantasy world in children’s literature, well let’s just say I’m extremely excited about it.”

“However, I am also mindful of the huge responsibility this represents. I want to make sure I do the best job I possibly can.”

In a statement from Bloomsbury Publishing, Emma Hopkin, the Bloomsbury Children’s MD, said: “Jim is the perfect mix of extremely talented artist and ardent Harry Potter fan, which will bring great spirit to his illustrations of JK Rowling’s extraordinary world.”
