It’s no secret that Zach Braff puts a lot of thought into the music choices in his films–see the amount of The Shins music in his last film Garden State. Braff’s new film, Wish I Was Here, showcases original songs by popular indie artists, including Bon Iver, NPR recently reported.
Music supervisor Mary Ramos aided Braff in his quest for the perfect soundtrack; flying all the way to Wisconsin to screen a rough cut of the film for the alternative musician, real name Justin Vernon, and his brother Nate.
“They were enjoying it and laughing, but at a certain point, they just got quiet,” explained Ramos in an email to NPR. “When it was over, Justin started humming. We talked afterwards about the relationship between Zach’s character and his brother [Josh Gad], and Justin and Nate talked a little about their father — all the while Justin kept distractedly humming.
“Eventually, he sang out the words ‘heavenly father.’ Before I even left their house, Justin was recording the first version of the song in his downstairs studio. His inspiration was that immediate,” she said.
In addition to the song Ramos mentioned, Bon Iver’s “Holocene,” from their 2011 album, will also appear on the soundtrack.
A sequel of sorts to Garden State, Braff’s new film is centered on 35-year-old Aiden Bloom and his conflicted feelings about his life, career, and family.
Wish I Was Here opens on July 18. The soundtrack will be available July 15, although you can preorder it now.
