The last time Brad Pitt played one half of a spy couple in cinema, it brought him to a new life and love, but it also caused controversy.

Hopefully that won't happen again and the romance will be left only on the silver screen for moviegoers' pleasure.

For his upcoming movie, Allied, Pitt stars as Max Vatan, a World War II spy and assassin. He is on a mission to kill German officers with french spy, Marianne Beausejour, played by Academy Award winner, Marion Cotillard. The two characters fall in love and marry while they are undergoing this dangerous endeavour.

The first trailer for Allied has been released and it has all the elements of an old Hollywood epic tale. It is pretty much a far cry from Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which played out more like a standard action movie.

In the trailer we see Cotillard and Pitt looking very glamorous in their period costumes, but of course the World War II background provides a sense of dark foreboding and thrill to the scenes. The fact that the story is set in Casablanca also hearkens back to the classic movie which bore the city's name. You know, the one with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman which was also set on World War II?

The premise itself is already exciting but another interesting fact about this film is that, according Steven Knight, who wrote the screen play, the story was inspired by real life events that he heard when he was only 21 years old.

“This is a very odd story,” he told Collider. “I was in Texas working as a dishwasher and doing all sorts of weird things. I was going out with an English girl at the time and her auntie lived in Texas, and she got talking about her brother who had been in the S.O.E., the British Secret Service if you like, and she told me this story that just stayed with me. I’ve always known it would be a film, and now it’s gonna be the ultimate. I can’t believe the cast we’ve got, I can’t believe the director we’ve got, it’s just a dream.”

The movie will be directed by Robert Zemeckis. Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode and Jared Harris will also star.

Allied is scheduled to hit cinemas on November 2, 2016.
